PAGLAUM, Haiyan Commemorative Forum

In 6 November 2015, the Institute in partnership with national NGOs in the Consortium for People’s Development-Disaster Response (CPD-DR) conducted the Supertyphoon Haiyan commemorative forum “Paglaum” from the Waray language for ‘hope’. The event gathered local NGO DRRM practicioners who shared their experienced in responding to the effects of Supertyphoon Haiyan, the forum also featured discussions led by international DRRM experts from the United Nations International Strategy on Disaster Reduction in the Asia-Pacific Region as well as a DRRM practioner from the academe. The event also served as the launch of the CPD-DR as a national level, multi-stakeholder, and multi-disciplinary consortium of DRRM and CCA practitioners. Professor Marion J. Tan of the University of the Philippines-Diliman, College of Social Work and Community Development presented her study commissioned by the Philippine Government on the impact and gaps of government responses to Haiyan-affected communities, Ms. Jazmin Jerusalem of the Leyte Center for Development a local DRRM NGO based in Tacloban City shared their oranization’s story of resilience as well as best practice in immediately responding to Supertyphoon Haiyan, Ms. Feng Min Kan of the UNISDR Asia-Pacific shared the international policy environment of DRRM and CCA in the context of several other international policies, most notable of which is the Sustainable Development Goals.
